’Positive peace. A possible challenge’
Tuesday 8 March 2011
[/Translation from Spanish by Beatriz Abril/]
In the framework of its Platform for Reflection and Discussion, Fundación Sabino Arana held a round table under the title “Peace in positive. A challenge made possible.” on the 8th of June, 2010 in the Euskalduna Palace, in Bilbao (Spain).
The Foundation organized this meeting as a first step of a medium-term project: in its compromise to defend human rights and reject violence, encouraging and motivating the citizenship in the Basque Country to embrace a gradual process of positively transforming grief caused by terrorism in a collective effort for peace in coexistence and reconciliation.
Personal as well as social approaches and experiences by the two groups of affected were presented: groups from Israel and Palestine and from Ireland, which are the two main references in the transformation of grief generated by violence in a collective compromise for peace in coexistence.
The representatives invited to the meeting were Jo Berry, president of the organization “Building Bridges for Peace” and the “International Network for Peace”; Pat Magee, ex-member of IRA and defender of the peace process in Northern Ireland; Aaron Barnea, responsible for International Relations in the Parents Circle-Families Forum and Ali Abu Awwad, spokesman of this organization.
The organization of the event counted on the invaluable mediation work of Juan Gutiérrez.
[(Some months afterwards, the 35th issue of the Hermes magazine by the Fundación Sabino Arana has presented the articles sent by these four attendants to public.
Likewise, Juan Guitérrez wrote an article to present the event for the magazine.
